UTP Merchant Services Review: The myPOS Transition Explained

UTP Merchant Services review UK

Quick verdict

UTP Merchant Services is no longer a normal new-business comparison. UTP has been acquired by myPOS, its old sales website has closed and the provider says it will now be known as myPOS UK. Existing UTP customers keep their current contract, rates and support until renewal, when the accounts team will discuss next steps.

That makes this guide most useful for two readers: an existing UTP or Barclaycard customer deciding what to do at renewal, and a new buyer who has found an older UTP review but should now compare the current myPOS UK offer instead.

Do not cancel, replace equipment or accept a migration proposal based on assumptions. Ask who the new contract party will be, whether the terminal and merchant account change, what happens to settlement and reporting, and how any new rate compares with the remaining UTP agreement.

What changed at UTP?

The official UTP customer website was checked on 11 September 2026. It states:

  • UTP has been acquired by myPOS.
  • UTP will now be known as myPOS UK.
  • The old utpgroup.co.uk website has been shut as part of the transition.
  • Existing UTP customers using Barclaycard continue with the same service and benefits for the duration of their agreement.
  • There are no immediate rate changes.
  • Existing contract terms remain until renewal.
  • The accounts team will contact customers near the end of the contract to discuss options.
  • Sales and support remain available through the new customer site.

This is more important than an old list of terminal features. A review that still presents UTP as an unchanged provider taking new applications would mislead readers.

What existing customers should do now

The official advice says no immediate action is required. That is sensible if the service works and the contract has time left. Use the period before renewal to organise documents and establish a cost baseline.

Collect:

  1. The merchant-services agreement and terminal-hire terms.
  2. The latest 12 monthly statements.
  3. Card turnover and transaction count by month.
  4. Consumer, commercial, international and American Express shares.
  5. Terminal rental, authorisation, PCI and minimum charges.
  6. Settlement timing and the bank account receiving funds.
  7. Chargeback, refund and support history.
  8. Renewal and notice dates.

Do not wait for a renewal call to discover that notice was required earlier. Check the current UTP agreement now.

Questions for the myPOS renewal conversation

Ask for a written proposal answering:

  • Will the merchant contract move to myPOS or remain with an existing acquirer?
  • Is a new application or underwriting review required?
  • Will the merchant ID change?
  • Does the terminal need replacement or reconfiguration?
  • Where will funds settle?
  • Does advertised fast access require a myPOS account or card?
  • What are the new rates for every card category?
  • Are authorisation, terminal, PCI, statement or minimum fees changing?
  • What is the new minimum term and notice period?
  • How will refunds and chargebacks from pre-migration sales be handled?
  • Will historic reports remain available and for how long?

Record any sales promise in the order form. A brand transition does not remove the need to compare pounds over the full term.

How to audit the existing UTP bill

Start with total monthly payment costs, not the quoted headline rate. Add merchant service charges, per-transaction fees, terminal rent, PCI, statements, minimums, settlement options and any integration or gateway cost.

Assume an existing customer takes £10,000 in a month across 400 payments. Their statement shows:

  • £120 in percentage-based processing.
  • £20 in authorisation charges.
  • £18 terminal rental plus VAT.
  • £5 account and PCI charges plus VAT where applicable.

Known monthly cost is £163 plus relevant VAT. The effective cost before VAT is 1.63% of turnover.

Suppose the renewal proposal offers 1.10% + 5p per payment and £20 monthly terminal rental. Assume every transaction qualifies for 1.10% and ignore other fees:

  • Percentage: £10,000 × 1.10% = £110.
  • Fixed charges: 400 × 5p = £20.
  • Terminal rental: £20 plus VAT.
  • Known total: £150 plus VAT on rental.

The apparent saving is only £13 a month before omitted fees. A new three-year commitment would save £468 over 36 months if every assumption held. One £500 exit charge or a different card mix would erase it.

This is an illustrative method, not a claim about UTP or myPOS pricing.

UTP services that remain relevant

The customer site still links to UTP account, billing, security, Faster Processing, app and cash-advance resources. Existing customers may continue using these services under their agreement.

Faster Processing

UTP historically promoted faster access to card takings. Existing customers should confirm the exact current settlement schedule, cut-off, days covered and destination account. “Faster” can refer to same-day availability, a provider-linked account or an accelerated transfer, depending on the service.

Do not assume the same settlement arrangement carries into a myPOS renewal. Ask for an actual Friday-to-Monday calendar example and any price.

UTP Shield and PCI support

The UTP site continues to provide security and PCI information. A managed security service does not make the merchant exempt from PCI DSS responsibilities. Complete required validation and check whether a service fee or non-compliance fee appears on statements.

Account and transaction reporting

UTP’s customer portal supports transaction and account management. Before migration, export statements and data needed for tax, chargebacks and reconciliation. Ask whether login credentials, reporting history and scheduled exports will change.

Cash advance

UTP links to a business cash-advance service. Treat funding separately from the card-machine renewal. Compare the amount advanced, total repayment, percentage deducted from card sales, expected duration and restriction on changing provider. A convenient offer is not automatically the cheapest finance.

What support remains available?

UTP lists 0330 99 99 300 for sales and 0330 99 99 900 for support. The official page says current technical support and customer-service teams remain available.

When contacting support, have the merchant ID, terminal serial number and exact error ready. For a contract or rate question, ask for written confirmation rather than relying on a telephone summary.

Existing Barclaycard-backed merchants should establish who owns each issue. UTP or myPOS may support the relationship and terminal while the acquirer controls other account or settlement matters. A clear escalation path prevents being passed between companies.

Should an existing UTP customer stay?

Staying can make sense when:

  • The current terminal and support work reliably.
  • The renewal price is competitive for the actual card mix.
  • Migration avoids operational disruption.
  • Settlement and reporting meet cash-flow needs.
  • The new term is reasonable and clearly documented.

Switching deserves consideration when:

  • The quote is higher after every fee.
  • Support or replacement performance has been poor.
  • The business needs a different EPOS, online or mobile setup.
  • Settlement destination or timing becomes less useful.
  • A long commitment offers little measurable saving.

Do not switch solely because ownership changed, and do not stay solely to avoid paperwork. Compare the next contract on current needs.

A practical renewal timetable

Start six months before the earliest possible end date. In month one, find agreements and statements. In month two, ask UTP which notices and renewal routes apply. In month three, obtain the myPOS proposal and two competing quotes. Use month four for demonstrations and reference checks. Keep month five for negotiation and formal notice, leaving the final month for installation and payout testing.

This timetable is illustrative. If the contract requires earlier notice, its date takes priority. Send notice by a permitted method and retain proof. Do not return the working terminal until the replacement has completed a real sale, refund and settlement.

New buyers should compare myPOS, not old UTP deals

The UTP sales site is closed, so a new merchant should not rely on archived UTP promotions or an old review’s rates. Go to the current provider named in the official transition notice and obtain today’s myPOS UK terms.

myPOS often combines payment acceptance with an account and business card. Establish where funds land and what transferring money to an external bank costs and takes. A fast balance is not identical to settlement into the existing current account.

Ask whether hardware is bought, rented or provided conditionally. Compare card-present, online, payment-link and remote-payment rates separately.

Terminal and migration checklist

If the provider proposes replacing an existing UTP terminal:

  1. Confirm the delivery and activation date.
  2. Keep the old machine active until the new one completes a real sale and payout.
  3. Test contactless, chip and PIN, refund, tip and receipt flows.
  4. Reconnect the EPOS and test duplicate prevention.
  5. Update staff instructions and support numbers.
  6. Export old reports before access ends.
  7. Return old equipment by tracked delivery and record its serial number.
  8. Check the first direct debit and settlement against the quote.

A brand migration is a bad time to assume settings copied correctly. Verify users, refund permissions, receipt details and bank information.

Settlement and reconciliation during change

Avoid changing bank details, merchant IDs and accounting mappings on the same day if the provider allows a staged move. Keep a list of the final UTP payouts and first new-service payouts.

Refunds can arrive after the original account stops taking new sales. Ask which balance funds them and where disputes are managed. Keep access to statements for the legal retention period your accountant recommends.

If the business uses Faster Processing, compare the old and proposed cut-offs. A migration that slows weekend funds can affect stock purchasing even when the percentage fee falls.

Contract risk

UTP says current contracts remain unchanged until renewal. That means the existing notice, rental and early-exit clauses still matter. Do not assume an acquisition allows penalty-free cancellation.

At renewal, distinguish:

  • A continuation of the current agreement.
  • A variation that changes selected terms.
  • A new myPOS contract replacing UTP.

The legal effect and cancellation rights can differ. Ask for time to read the documents and compare the total first and later years. If the current arrangement has a separate Barclaycard agreement, confirm whether it ends automatically or needs its own notice.

Alternatives worth comparing

1 myPOS UK

myPOS is the natural transition route identified by UTP. Compare its present hardware, account, settlement and transfer model rather than assuming old UTP terms. Pay particular attention to where money becomes available.

2 Tyl by NatWest

Tyl publishes rates for businesses up to £50,000 annual card value and rents PAX machines on 12-month contracts. Its transparent rate card makes a useful renewal benchmark. Read our Tyl review.

3 takepayments

takepayments offers another managed UK card-machine route. It is useful for comparing quote quality, service and commitment. Read our takepayments review or request the selected takepayments offer.

4 SumUp or Square

Bought pay-as-you-go readers reduce contract risk and are easy to model. They may cost more per transaction at high volume but can suit seasonal or simple businesses. See our SumUp review and Square review.

Frequently asked questions

Is UTP still trading?

UTP’s official customer site remains live for existing customers, but it says UTP has been acquired by myPOS, will be known as myPOS UK and has closed its old sales website.

Will existing UTP rates change immediately?

UTP says there are no immediate rate changes. Current terms remain until the contract reaches renewal, when the accounts team will discuss options.

Do UTP customers need to take action now?

The official page says no action is needed at this stage. Customers should still check their renewal date, retain statements and prepare questions before the renewal contact.

What happens to Barclaycard customers?

UTP says existing customers who are with Barclaycard continue receiving the same service and benefits for the duration of the agreement. Ask how the relationship changes at renewal.

Can a new business apply to UTP?

The previous UTP website is closed as part of the transition. A new buyer should use current myPOS UK information and compare other live providers rather than an archived UTP offer.

Should I cancel because UTP was acquired?

Not automatically. The existing contract still applies. Compare service, full cost and the renewal proposal, and follow the written notice and equipment-return terms.

Bottom line

UTP is now an existing-customer and migration story, not a conventional new-sales review. Current customers can continue under their agreement, but should prepare early for renewal and demand a written myPOS proposal. New buyers should compare the current myPOS UK offer with live alternatives. The safest decision protects settlement, reporting and contract rights while proving any saving in pounds.
