takepayments Review: Fees, Contracts & Is It Right for You?

Want help choosing a card machine, but unsure whether a monthly contract will pay off? takepayments offers tailored packages. The decision comes down to the complete quote, the equipment you need and the support available when you are trading.

This guide helps you assess a takepayments offer for a shop, salon, café, mobile business or online operation. Start with the quick verdict, then use the cost checklist before agreeing to anything. You can also compare card machines across the wider market.

Quick verdict: worth getting a quote, worth reading the terms

A useful starting point for established traders

If card payments are a regular part of your income, request a quote using your existing processing statement. That gives you a concrete way to judge whether changing provider would improve your costs or day-to-day operation.

Be careful with fixed costs

If you only sell at occasional events, a recurring charge can be hard to justify. Compare the annual commitment with buying a reader and paying transaction fees only. A lower percentage does not automatically produce a lower bill.

takepayments advertises a 12-month contract and requires a separate agreement with its nominated acquiring bank. Check both documents, including renewal and cancellation terms. Its headline settlement offer is conditional, so establish when money would reach your bank for each payment channel you use. Source: takepayments service terms.

Our assessment is that the quote is worth comparing if you value help choosing a setup. It is not possible to call it cheaper, faster or better for your business without seeing the proposed fees and service arrangements.

Which takepayments machine or tool would you actually use?

The current card machine range highlights A920 Pro and takepaymentsplus. The older categories of countertop, portable and mobile describe how you use a device, but do not necessarily mean three separate models are available to order. Ask for the exact model and software package in your quotation. Source: current card machine range.

1. A920 range: taking payments around your premises

The A920 product page describes WiFi, 4G and Bluetooth connectivity, an integrated printer and refunds from the device. Confirm which version you would receive because the navigation identifies A920 Pro while parts of the page use A920. Source: A920 specifications.

For a restaurant, test the connection at the furthest table. For a mobile service, check reception where you work. Ask about replacement equipment and what you can do if the connection fails during a busy period.

2. takepaymentsplus: products and reporting on the terminal

takepaymentsplus adds product categories, cash transaction recording, split cash/card payments, gratuities and reporting. It is advertised on A920 Pro and A77 hardware, with a management portal for remote administration. Source: takepaymentsplus features.

Recording a cash sale does not mean the machine physically accepts notes. Before treating it as a replacement for your till, request a demonstration of your real tasks: returns, staff permissions, product changes and end-of-day reports. Confirm any stock management or accounting integration you need rather than assuming it is included.

3. Online, payment link and phone options

takepayments also lists payment gateways, pay by link and phone payment tools. These may help when a customer is not standing in front of your terminal. Ask which services are included in your quote and whether they have separate fees or payout arrangements. Source: online payment options.

A tradesperson might need a link for an outstanding invoice; a retailer may need a checkout connected to its website. Those are different requirements. Our online payments guide explains the options, while the payment gateway comparison helps with a broader shortlist.

takepayments fees: compare the whole bill

The card machine pricing page asks for information about your turnover, chosen device and payment types before providing a package. There is no single public rate on that page that can be applied to every business. Prepare your monthly card sales, transaction count and average sale value before requesting a quote.

Use an ordinary month and a quiet month, not just your best trading period. If you sell to overseas visitors, take online deposits or regularly accept business cards, tell the provider. Your card mix can matter as much as your turnover. Our card machine fees guide explains the charges to compare.

A worked example: when does a lower rate save money?

Imagine two hypothetical offers. Offer A charges 1.75% with no monthly fee. Offer B charges 1.2% plus £25 a month. Assume identical eligible card types and no other charges. These are illustrative figures, not takepayments or competitor quotes.

Illustrative monthly processing costs
Monthly card sales
Offer A: 1.75%
Offer B: 1.2% + £25
Monthly card sales£2,000
Offer A: 1.75%£35
Offer B: 1.2% + £25£49
Monthly card sales£5,000
Offer A: 1.75%£87.50
Offer B: 1.2% + £25£85
Monthly card sales£10,000
Offer A: 1.75%£175
Offer B: 1.2% + £25£145

In this simplified example, the break-even point is about £4,545 of monthly card sales. Below that, the monthly charge outweighs the lower rate. Above it, Offer B becomes cheaper. Add hardware, fixed pence fees and any other charges before using the result to make a buying decision.

Keep a copy of the quote

Ask the salesperson to put any promised saving, included service or cancellation arrangement in writing. Compare those details with the agreement you are asked to sign. If the two do not match, resolve it before proceeding.

When will you get paid, and who helps if something goes wrong?

Next working day settlement depends on acquiring approval and completing the terminal’s banking process before the required cut-off. Online checkout, payment links and virtual terminals may follow different timescales. A Friday payment should not be assumed to arrive on Saturday. Ask for a worked example covering a weekend and bank holiday.

takepayments advertises customer support seven days a week. That is not the same as 24-hour support or a guaranteed repair time. Ask for the opening hours for your product, the escalation route for missing payouts and how quickly a failed terminal can be replaced. Check the provider’s contact page for the current support routes.

For a café opening early or a restaurant closing late, the useful question is whether help is available during your busiest service. Keep the support details somewhere staff can find them, along with a simple plan for handling a terminal outage.

For occasional events, read our card machine hire guide. For a broader ongoing arrangement, use the merchant services comparison. Larger businesses should also request details of reporting across sites, implementation support and any volume pricing rather than relying on a small-business headline offer.

How to use customer reviews sensibly

Read recent feedback about the things you will rely on: billing accuracy, equipment faults, support and leaving the service. A review about a helpful sales call answers a different question from one written after a year of trading.

Look for repeated themes, how the company responds and whether the issue relates to the same product you are considering. Neither one complaint nor a high aggregate score can tell you what your individual contract will cost. Review scores and counts change, so check them when you are making your decision.

Before you switch: five checks that prevent expensive surprises

  1. Read your current agreement. Establish the notice period, remaining commitment and equipment return process.
  2. Compare a real statement. Include all processing and recurring charges, not just the percentage printed at the top.
  3. Confirm compatibility. Give the provider the name and version of your till, website platform or booking software.
  4. Plan the changeover. Agree installation and testing before relying on the new machine for a busy trading day.
  5. Check the first payout. Reconcile a small test payment and make sure staff know how to process a refund.

If the acquiring terminology is unfamiliar, start with our merchant account guide. It explains how the account, processor and payout arrangements fit together.

Frequently asked questions

Does takepayments have a monthly fee?

Ask for an itemised quote showing every recurring charge and what applies during a month with no sales. Do not treat the transaction rate as the complete price.

Is the contract always 12 months?

The advertised card machine offer describes 12 months. Check the term in your individual proposal and the separate acquiring agreement, including notice and renewal provisions.

Can a sole trader use takepayments?

A sole trader can enquire about a package. Acceptance depends on the provider’s checks and your business activity. Compare the fixed commitment with your expected card income before applying.

Is takepayments cheaper than Square or SumUp?

That cannot be established without comparable quotes and your payment profile. Calculate the annual total using the same turnover, transaction count, card mix and required equipment for each provider.

Does takepaymentsplus replace a full EPOS system?

It offers useful terminal-based product and reporting features, but you should check every essential workflow. Request a demonstration if you need detailed inventory, bookings, kitchen operations or connections to other software.
