Revolut Terminal Review UK: Fees, Hardware and Costs

Quick verdict
Revolut’s current in-person range is more capable than the older Bluetooth Reader most people associate with the brand. The £169 plus VAT Revolut Terminal is a standalone device with an integrated printer, eSIM and Wi-Fi, a product catalogue and access to Revolut Pay. The £129 plus VAT Lite Terminal removes the printer but keeps built-in POS features. Revolut’s Help Centre says the original Reader is no longer available to buy, although existing devices continue to work.
Published in-person pricing starts at 0.8% + 2p for UK consumer Visa and Mastercard. UK consumer American Express costs 1.7% + 2p, while non-UK and commercial cards cost 2.6% + 2p. These are attractive rates for the right card mix, but payment acceptance sits inside a Revolut Business account. The Basic business plan currently starts at £10 a month.
Revolut Terminal is most interesting for a business that already wants Revolut Business, values next-day access including weekends, or receives payments in several currencies. A business with many corporate or overseas cards should model the higher categories before being drawn to the 0.8% headline.
Current Revolut prices
The official payment acceptance pricing, device comparison and business plan page were checked on 11 September 2026.
Revolut says hardware has no separate subscription or setup charge. You still need an approved Revolut Business Merchant account, and the Business account itself has a plan fee.
Terminal, Lite Terminal or Tap to Pay
The Revolut Terminal is the best fit where customers need paper receipts or staff want a self-contained checkout. Revolut lists more than 10 hours of battery life, eSIM plus physical SIM connectivity, Wi-Fi, magnetic stripe, chip and PIN, contactless, tipping and an integrated catalogue.
The Lite Terminal weighs 245g and is presented with more than 12 hours of battery life. It accepts the same main payment methods and can issue digital receipts, but it does not print them. For tableside service, mobile retail or a trades counter, saving £40 may be sensible if email or SMS receipts are enough.
Tap to Pay on iPhone removes the hardware purchase but adds 8p per transaction. It is contactless-only and depends on a compatible iPhone. Keep a chip-and-PIN option where customers may exceed contactless authentication limits or use cards that need insertion.
The old Revolut Reader has changed status
The official Reader setup help page says Readers are no longer available for purchase. Existing devices continue to operate.
That makes an old review recommending a new £49 Reader misleading. Current buyers should compare the Terminal, Lite Terminal and Tap to Pay. Existing Reader owners should check software support, replacement options and what happens if the device fails.
Do not buy a used Reader without written confirmation that it can be transferred and activated on your Merchant account. Payment hardware is not automatically reusable like an ordinary Bluetooth accessory.
Worked monthly cost with a mixed card base
Assume a business takes £12,000 a month across 600 in-person transactions averaging £20:
- 80% UK consumer Visa/Mastercard: £9,600 × 0.8% + 480 × 2p = £76.80 + £9.60 = £86.40.
- 10% UK consumer American Express: £1,200 × 1.7% + 60 × 2p = £20.40 + £1.20 = £21.60.
- 10% commercial or non-UK cards: £1,200 × 2.6% + 60 × 2p = £31.20 + £1.20 = £32.40.
- Processing total: £140.40.
- Basic business plan from £10: illustrative combined monthly cost £150.40.
The blended processing rate is 1.17% before the business plan. If every payment qualified for 0.8% + 2p, processing would be £108. The card mix adds £32.40 in this example.
Hardware, VAT, delivery, refunds, chargebacks and any other account use are excluded. Replace the assumptions with statement data.
Small baskets and the fixed fee
The 2p element is modest, but it still changes the effective rate on very small sales. At the domestic consumer rate:
- A £2 sale costs 1.6p percentage plus 2p, rounded according to Revolut’s billing method. That is around 1.8% before rounding.
- A £20 sale costs 16p plus 2p, or 18p, which is 0.9%.
- A £100 sale costs 80p plus 2p, or 82p, which is 0.82%.
Ask how fractional pennies are rounded and whether rounding occurs per transaction. A café processing thousands of small baskets should calculate from actual transaction-level data.
Tap to Pay worked example
Assume 400 UK consumer Visa/Mastercard Tap to Pay transactions averaging £15, total £6,000:
- Base fee: £6,000 × 0.8% = £48.
- Standard fixed fees: 400 × 2p = £8.
- Tap to Pay additions: 400 × 8p = £32.
- Total: £88, an effective 1.47%.
The same £6,000 through a Revolut Terminal would cost £56 under the published domestic consumer rate. Tap to Pay saves the £169 plus VAT hardware purchase but costs £32 more every month at this volume. Ignoring VAT and time value, the Terminal’s hardware price is recovered through the fee difference in about 5.3 months.
Revolut Pay can lower cost, but adoption matters
Revolut Pay costs 0.5% + 2p in person on supported Revolut terminals. It lets eligible customers pay from a Revolut account and can award RevPoints under Revolut’s current programme.
Do not model every sale at the Revolut Pay rate. Use an observed adoption percentage after launch. If 10% of £12,000 domestic turnover moves from 0.8% to 0.5%, the percentage saving is £1,200 × 0.3% = £3.60 a month. It is useful but not a reason to ignore the rest of the quote.
Staff need a clear prompt that does not slow checkout. Customers should be free to choose a normal card.
Settlement into Revolut Business
Revolut advertises access to merchant proceeds within 24 hours, including weekends and holidays, subject to its payment-processing agreement. Funds arrive in the Revolut Business Merchant account, not automatically in an unrelated bank account.
This can help a weekend trader buy stock on Sunday, provided suppliers can be paid from the account. If your main bank is elsewhere, include the transfer timetable, allowance and any transfer fee needed to move money.
Revolut also says merchants can accept and settle in multiple currencies and hold funds without exchange until they choose. Check the exact supported settlement currencies, exchange allowance, out-of-hours markup and destination account. The business plan lists a 0.6% fee above the plan’s exchange allowance and 1% outside market hours.
POS features and limitations
Both current terminals support a catalogue and Revolut’s POS tools. Revolut also offers a Point of Sale app for iPad with products, analytics, table maps and location management.
That does not make it the right EPOS for every business. A restaurant should test modifiers, courses, kitchen routing, split bills and service charges. A retailer should test variants, purchase orders, stocktakes, returns and barcode workflows. Ask whether essential functions work directly on the terminal or require the iPad app.
Run an end-of-day report and reconcile it to the Merchant account. Confirm how cash, tips, refunds and Revolut Pay appear. If accounting needs manual spreadsheets every week, a cheap processing rate can still create expensive admin.
Connectivity, offline use and receipts
The full Terminal supports eSIM, SIM and Wi-Fi. The Lite Terminal supports cellular and Wi-Fi. Multiple routes reduce dependence on one network, but coverage should be tested at the actual premises or event.
Revolut promotes offline capability for the Terminal. Offline transactions are approved later, so limits, expiry and liability matter. Set a maximum value and train staff when to refuse or use another method.
The full Terminal prints receipts and needs paper. The Lite uses digital receipts. Ask how customer contact details are handled and whether a receipt can be reissued without exposing information to staff unnecessarily.
Support, disputes and account risk
Revolut Business lists 24/7 English support. Establish whether urgent merchant-payment issues are handled in the same route as banking questions and whether phone support is available on your plan.
The published chargeback fee is £15, returned if the dispute is decided in the merchant’s favour. The direct cost is only part of the problem. Keep signed delivery records, clear product descriptions and cancellation evidence.
As with any processor, onboarding approval does not guarantee every future transaction will settle without review. Avoid depending on one provider for all banking and payment channels until the operation has been tested.
Who Revolut Terminal suits
It can suit a business already using Revolut Business, a weekend venue that values 24-hour settlement, or an international business wanting to retain several currencies. The Lite Terminal is attractive when printed receipts are unnecessary.
It is less compelling for a merchant that does not want a Revolut Business account or mainly accepts commercial and non-UK cards. A basic sole trader with occasional sales may prefer a reader with no business-account subscription.

Does Revolut pay out at weekends?
Revolut advertises access to proceeds within 24 hours, including weekends and holidays, subject to its payment-processing terms. Funds settle into the Revolut Merchant account.

Bottom line
Revolut’s current Terminal range combines competitive domestic-consumer pricing with fast access to funds and useful multi-currency features. The old £49 Reader is no longer the buying choice. Model the Business plan, card mix, destination account and hardware together. For the right Revolut user it is a compelling package; for a B2B or tourist-heavy merchant, the higher card categories may remove much of the headline advantage.
