Elavon Card Machine Review: Prices, Offers and Contract Checks

Elavon card machine review UK

Quick verdict

Elavon is an established acquiring and payment provider with countertop, portable, mobile and smart terminals, online payments and integration tools. It is most relevant to a business that wants one provider across in-person and online sales, values round-the-clock technical support, or can negotiate a suitable quote at steady turnover.

Its current promotional prices look attractive, but they are starting points rather than a complete bill. The DX8000 smart terminal is advertised at £1 a month for 12 months and £20 a month thereafter. A combined smart-terminal and gateway offer is £20 a month for 12 months, with 16p per gateway transaction and a merchant service charge starting at 0.37%. Elavon states that the proposition’s monthly price reverts to the standard rate available after 12 months.

Ask for the post-promotion price, card-by-card processing rates, contract term, settlement cost and every fixed charge before signing. A low first-year rental can distract from much larger processing or later-year costs.

Elavon’s UK payment options

Elavon’s official point-of-sale page was checked on 11 September 2026. It lists several routes:

  • SmartPOS DX8000, a portable smart terminal with a large touchscreen.
  • Elavon Mobile for payments over a mobile network.
  • Tetra Move, a portable terminal for use around premises.
  • Tetra Desk, a fixed card machine at a till.
  • Elavon Register, a 15.6-inch EPOS terminal with dual touchscreens and Elavon POS software.
  • Castles smart-terminal models.
  • Online gateway and payment services.
  • Smartlink integration, Pay by Link, reporting and Dynamic Currency Conversion for eligible users.

This breadth is useful for a growing or multi-channel business. It also creates more decisions. The cheapest terminal is not necessarily the right terminal, and an add-on only saves work when it fits the existing till, website and accounts.

Current offers checked in September 2026

Elavon’s official special-offers page showed the following on 11 September 2026:

Offer
Promotional price
Important limitation
Elavon Payment Gateway
£0 gateway monthly fee for first 3 months; 14p per gateway transaction; plus 0.99% on Visa and Mastercard
The later monthly gateway fee and other card pricing need confirmation
DX8000 smart terminal
£1 per month for 12 months
£20 monthly terminal fee thereafter
Smart terminal plus gateway
£20 monthly for 12 months; 16p per gateway transaction; merchant service charge starting at 0.37%; £0 minimum merchant service charge
“Starting at” is not a universal rate; monthly price reverts to the standard rate available after 12 months

Elavon also promotes next-day funds and 24/7 technical support with these offers. Eligibility and full terms apply. Ask whether all prices exclude VAT and whether there are setup, PCI, statement, authorisation, refund, chargeback or faster-settlement charges.

Do not combine the best number from each offer into an imaginary package. The 0.99% gateway rate and 0.37% starting merchant service charge relate to different propositions. Only the written quote shows what one business will actually pay.

What the DX8000 promotion really costs

The first-year terminal rental is simple:

  • 12 months × £1 = £12, before VAT if applicable.

At the published later price:

  • 12 months × £20 = £240, before VAT.

The visible rental therefore rises by £228 between those two 12-month periods. Processing and other fees are additional in both. If the agreement extends beyond the promotion, model at least one full later year rather than judging the package from £1 a month.

The DX8000 can still be good value if its mobility, touchscreen, software and support fit the business. The point is to compare the economic term, not just the introductory period.

Worked online gateway cost

Assume an online retailer processes 1,000 Visa and Mastercard transactions totalling £25,000 in a month under the advertised gateway figures. Ignore refunds, chargebacks, fraud tools and other cards.

  • Percentage charge: £25,000 × 0.99% = £247.50.
  • Gateway transaction charge: 1,000 × 14p = £140.
  • Combined known transaction cost: £387.50, or 1.55% of sales.
  • Gateway monthly fee during the first three months: £0.

This is not a complete long-term total because the page does not state the monthly gateway fee after month three in the offer summary. A business needs that figure and all non-Visa/Mastercard pricing in writing.

The fixed 14p matters with low baskets. At a £25 average order it adds 0.56% to the effective rate. At a £100 order it adds 0.14%. Compare providers using both transaction count and turnover.

Worked smart-terminal and gateway example

Assume the combined offer applies to £20,000 of monthly card sales across 800 gateway transactions. For illustration, assume every pound qualifies for the advertised starting 0.37% merchant service charge. That is an optimistic assumption, not a promise of the actual card mix.

  • Percentage: £20,000 × 0.37% = £74.
  • Gateway transactions: 800 × 16p = £128.
  • Monthly proposition fee: £20.
  • Known total: £222 before VAT on taxable elements, or 1.11% of sales.

Now stress the model. If the blended merchant service charge were 1.20% instead of 0.37%, the percentage component would be £240 and total would become £388. The difference is £166 in one month. Ask for rates for consumer debit, consumer credit, commercial, premium, international and American Express cards, then use the actual mix.

Choosing an Elavon terminal

DX8000 SmartPOS

Elavon describes the DX8000 as a compact, portable smart POS with a large touchscreen that works over Wi-Fi or mobile connectivity. It is designed for service away from a fixed till. Ask which apps come with the quoted configuration and whether the terminal integrates with your EPOS.

The current offer page promotes a long-lasting battery but does not provide one trading-hour guarantee for every use. Screen brightness, signal, printing and apps affect runtime. Test it over a real shift and price a charging dock or spare if needed.

Tetra Move

Tetra Move is a wireless terminal for taking payment around premises. It may suit a restaurant or clinic that needs portability without a broader smart-app workflow. Compare coverage in the farthest customer area and ask whether the connection fails over.

Tetra Desk

Tetra Desk is a fixed terminal for a till. A wired or stable local connection can be preferable where the payment never needs to move. Fixed hardware is less likely to be misplaced and can be easier to keep powered.

Elavon Mobile

Elavon Mobile is presented for taking payments where mobile network signal is available. It can suit trades, delivery or field work. Check network coverage at repeat locations, SIM inclusion, data cost and what staff should do when the signal disappears.

Elavon Register

Elavon Register combines EPOS hardware and software with payments. It deserves a separate total-cost comparison covering software licences, hardware, accessories, installation, product migration, support and payment fees. Do not compare its monthly price with a bare card reader.

Online and in-person together

A single provider can simplify reporting where a shop also sells through a website, sends payment links or takes telephone orders. Elavon offers gateway services, Pay by Link and a portal for reports, transactions and settlements.

The benefit depends on whether the channels genuinely reconcile. Ask for a demonstration showing an online sale, shop sale, refund, chargeback and payout. Can the report separate channels, VAT, tips and fees? Can staff find one customer without exposing information they should not see?

Phone and online payments are card-not-present transactions. They carry different risk and may have different fees from terminal payments. Never use the card-present percentage as the assumed price for every channel.

Settlement and cash flow

Elavon says standard funding is within 48 hours and faster-payments customers can receive money the next day. Its offer pages promote next-day money. The provider page notes that merchants sign up for Faster Payments for next-day access.

Confirm the settlement destination, eligibility, cut-off, bank-holiday treatment and price. “Next day” should mean the day funds reach the account you can spend from, not the day a payout is initiated.

For a business relying on weekend takings to buy Monday stock, run a calendar example with the provider. A faster option can be worthwhile, but add its cost to the quote. Keep a reserve for refunds and chargebacks even when sales settle quickly.

Support and outages

Elavon lists customer-service telephone hours of Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm, and chat from 8am to 6pm. Technical support is listed as available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Those published hours were checked on 11 September 2026.

Separate technical troubleshooting from account administration. An engineer may help reconnect a terminal on Saturday but may not change bank details or resolve a fee question. Ask what 24/7 support can do, the failed-terminal replacement target and how an urgent spare is activated.

Elavon links to a public system monitor. Bookmark it alongside the support number and account details. Create an outage plan covering cash, offline acceptance if available, payment links and customer communication. Do not take card details on paper.

Contracts and quote checks

The promotional period is not necessarily the complete contract term. Ask for:

  • Minimum agreement length and renewal method.
  • First-year and later-year terminal or proposition price.
  • Notice window and early-termination calculation.
  • All card categories and fixed authorisation charges.
  • Minimum monthly charges and annual rate-review rights.
  • PCI service and non-compliance fees.
  • Gateway, Pay by Link, integration and reporting costs.
  • Refund, chargeback and retrieval fees.
  • Terminal ownership, return and damage costs.
  • Settlement schedule and faster-funding fee.

If a price is described as “starting at”, ask which portion of the last 12 months would have received it. A statement analysis is more useful than a generic savings claim.

Alternatives worth comparing

1 Tyl by NatWest

Tyl publishes rates for businesses up to £50,000 annual card value and rents countertop, mobile and smart PAX machines on a 12-month contract. It is a useful transparent baseline for a smaller merchant. Read our Tyl review.

2 takepayments

takepayments is another quote-led route focused on UK small businesses, card machines and support. Compare full fee schedules and switching terms, not just the initial rate. See our takepayments review or request the selected takepayments offer.

3 Square

Square sells hardware and publishes a 1.75% UK in-person rate. It can be easier for a small business to trial and includes a broad POS ecosystem. Paid software and other channels add separate costs. Read our Square review.

4 SumUp

SumUp offers low-cost bought readers, a standard 1.69% in-person rate and an optional subscription for lower eligible domestic consumer-card pricing. It can suit low or variable volume where terminal rent and contract risk outweigh a negotiated percentage.

Frequently asked questions

How much is an Elavon card machine?

Elavon’s current offer lists the DX8000 terminal at £1 a month for 12 months and £20 monthly thereafter. Processing and other charges apply, and full terms and VAT treatment need confirmation.

Is 0.37% Elavon’s standard card rate?

No. The combined terminal and gateway promotion says the merchant service charge starts at 0.37%. The actual blended cost depends on the quote and card mix.

Does Elavon settle the next day?

Elavon promotes next-day funds and says faster-payments customers can receive money the next day. Confirm eligibility, price, cut-off, days covered and destination account.

Does Elavon offer 24-hour support?

Elavon lists technical support 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Customer-service phone and chat hours are narrower. Ask what the technical team can resolve outside business hours.

Can Elavon connect to my EPOS?

Elavon offers Smartlink and integrated options. Compatibility depends on the till product, version and terminal. Obtain written confirmation and test failures, refunds and reconciliation.

Is Elavon suitable for a sole trader?

It can be, especially where support or multi-channel payments matter. A sole trader with low or uncertain turnover should also compare a bought pay-as-you-go reader to reduce fixed costs and commitment.

Bottom line

Elavon offers a broad, credible payment stack and useful technical-support coverage. Its promotional prices can make the first year attractive, but the best buying decision includes later-year rental, realistic card rates, every fixed fee and the contract. Get the complete schedule, test the actual terminal and integration, and compare total pounds over at least two years before applying.
