Barclaycard Card Machine Review: Costs, Contracts and Best Fit

Quick verdict for a small business

Barclaycard is a credible choice when you want an established payments relationship, a choice of terminal types and support that is designed for businesses taking cards every day. It is less obviously the best deal for a new sole trader who wants one cheap reader, no monthly commitment and a rate that can be understood in ten seconds.

The useful distinction is between Barclaycard's self-serve Smartpay Anywhere reader, its Smartpay Touch POS package and its quote-led countertop or portable terminals. They are not one product with one price. Compare the complete package you would actually buy, including terminal cost, transaction rates, monthly charges, contract length, settlement and support.

Our view is straightforward. Put Barclaycard on a shortlist for an established shop, café, restaurant, salon or service business. Also obtain a transparent pay-as-you-go benchmark and one tailored merchant-services quote. Choose only after converting all three into a 12-month cost using your own card mix.

What Barclaycard is offering

Barclaycard Business provides card acceptance rather than merely manufacturing a device. That means the relationship can cover the terminal, payment processing, merchant account, settlement and support. This is different from buying an Ingenico terminal through an independent acquirer, where the machine brand and payment contract are separate decisions.

The official Barclaycard Business site was checked on 11 September 2026. Product availability and promotional terms can change, so treat the figures below as a dated comparison point and verify the order summary before accepting.

Smartpay Anywhere

Smartpay Anywhere is the low-commitment route. Barclaycard advertises the reader at £29 plus VAT with pay-as-you-go pricing and no fixed contract. It pairs with an app and suits occasional sellers, mobile services and businesses that do not need a receipt printer or full till.

The device price is £34.80 including VAT. A VAT-registered business may normally reclaim eligible input VAT, but a non-registered sole trader feels the full £34.80 cash cost. The more important figure is the current transaction rate shown during sign-up. A cheap reader can become expensive if it is used for high monthly turnover.

Smartpay Touch

Smartpay Touch is an all-in-one POS-style route, not just a reader. Barclaycard's public offer has shown £29 plus VAT monthly rental and a 1.6% transaction rate. The package is aimed at businesses that value a larger touchscreen, receipt printing, mobile connectivity and POS functions.

That £29 becomes £34.80 of monthly cash outflow including VAT. Over 12 months it is £348 excluding VAT before a single transaction. Ask what software, support and replacement service are included, and whether the advertised rate applies to every card you commonly accept.

Countertop and portable terminals

Traditional terminals are generally quote-led. A countertop machine belongs beside a fixed till. A portable terminal can move around a restaurant, clinic or shop using Wi-Fi or mobile connectivity. These deals may offer a lower headline transaction rate than a pay-as-you-go reader, but can include terminal rental, a minimum term and other account charges.

If you are unsure which physical format fits, start with our card machine guide and small-business card reader guide. Hardware should follow the way customers pay, not the other way round.

Worked costs: three types of merchant

These examples are illustrations, not quotes. They use 1.6% for Smartpay Touch because that rate appeared on Barclaycard's public offer, £29 monthly rental excluding VAT, and no other fees. Your effective rate may differ by card, channel and agreement.

For the therapist, rental lifts the effective cost to 3.05% of turnover. A no-monthly-fee reader could be better even with a slightly higher rate. For the café, the effective cost is about 1.84%. For the restaurant, it is about 1.68% before other charges.

Transaction count matters when a rival quote includes a fixed pence fee. Suppose the café receives an alternative offer of 1.15% plus 5p per transaction and £20 monthly rental. On £12,000 over 1,000 payments, processing is £138 plus £50, then £20 rental, for £208 excluding VAT. That is £13 less than the illustration above, not the dramatic saving suggested by comparing 1.15% with 1.6% alone.

Run the calculation over a quiet month and a peak month. A seasonal business can otherwise choose a contract that looks efficient in December but is expensive from January to March.

Costs to request in writing

Ask the salesperson for one schedule containing every fee. Do not rely on a verbal assurance that a charge is "included".

  • Rates for UK consumer debit, consumer credit, commercial, premium, international and American Express cards.
  • Any authorisation or pence-per-transaction charge.
  • Terminal rental, software, account, PCI support and minimum monthly charges.
  • Refund treatment, chargeback administration and retrieval fees.
  • Settlement speed, cut-off time, weekend treatment and faster-payout charges.
  • Minimum term, renewal, notice window and early termination formula.
  • Replacement times, courier costs and support hours.
  • Fees for online, telephone or keyed payments, which should not be assumed to match in-person rates.

Our card machine fees guide explains how these pieces fit together. If the quote uses interchange plus pricing, request a recent sample statement so you can see the provider markup separately from interchange and scheme fees.

Cash flow and settlement

Barclaycard promotes next-day settlement for eligible transactions subject to cut-off times and product terms. "Next day" needs testing against your trading pattern. A pub closing after the batch cut-off on Friday may not see money on Saturday merely because the headline says next day.

Ask for a calendar example covering a Thursday sale, a late Friday sale and a bank-holiday weekend. Confirm which bank account receives the settlement and whether the account must be with Barclays. Also ask how refunds and chargebacks appear, because deductions can make a payout smaller than the sales total in your POS report.

A café buying stock daily may reasonably value reliable next-day settlement more than a 0.05 percentage-point saving. On £10,000 monthly turnover that difference is only £5. Cash-flow certainty can matter more, provided the promise works at the times you trade.

Hardware and operating fit

For a fixed retail counter

A countertop terminal is usually the cleanest choice. Ask whether it integrates with your till so the amount passes automatically to the terminal. Integrated payments reduce double entry and the risk of keying £9.50 as £95.00, but integration can add software or installation cost.

For hospitality

A portable terminal should remain connected at the furthest table, print or issue a receipt quickly, and support tipping in a way that fits your policy. Test the payment flow during a demonstration. Count the taps from entering a table total to completing payment, splitting a bill and recording a tip.

For mobile work

Smartpay Anywhere is the natural Barclaycard comparison, but test phone compatibility, mobile signal and battery routines. A reader that depends on a phone also depends on that phone being charged, connected and available to the staff member taking payment.

For a smart POS requirement

Smartpay Touch may justify its monthly cost if it replaces a separate till subscription or makes reporting easier. List the functions you actually need: product catalogue, modifiers, staff permissions, refunds, stock, tips and end-of-day exports. A large screen is not a substitute for the right software.

Contract and support checks

Barclaycard's established service operation is one reason merchants shortlist it, but the practical question is what happens to your specific product at 8pm on Saturday. Ask which number you call, whether troubleshooting is available 24/7, and the replacement target for a failed terminal.

Keep the terminal agreement, processing agreement and any software agreement together. They may have different suppliers or termination dates. Before signing, write the notice deadline in your calendar and save the final fee schedule. If a salesperson promises a waiver or buyout, insist that it appears in the contract.

Never cancel an old provider until the new terminal has taken a live low-value payment, issued a receipt, settled to the intended account and completed a refund. A few days of overlap is usually cheaper than losing a trading day.

A practical buying decision

Choose Barclaycard when you value a recognised provider, require a traditional or smart terminal, and the written total cost is competitive for your real turnover. Smartpay Anywhere is also reasonable for a small trader who specifically wants Barclaycard without a contract.

Choose a simpler reader when turnover is low or irregular and rental would dominate your bill. Seek a negotiated acquirer quote when turnover is high enough that a modest rate reduction outweighs fixed costs.

Use this sequence:

  1. Export three months of card sales and transaction counts.
  2. Separate in-person, online and telephone payments.
  3. Estimate the mix of consumer, business and international cards from statements.
  4. Price every offer for a quiet, normal and busy month.
  5. Add hardware, software and compliance charges.
  6. Score settlement, support and exit terms alongside cost.

Frequently asked questions

Is Barclaycard suitable for a new business?

Yes, particularly through Smartpay Anywhere, but a new business should compare the full cost with no-monthly-fee readers. Traditional terminals may involve underwriting and a longer commitment.

Does Barclaycard publish one transaction fee?

No. Different products use different pricing structures. Smartpay Touch has had a public packaged rate, while traditional terminal pricing can be tailored. Verify the rate for your product and card mix.

Is the £29 Smartpay Touch price including VAT?

The public rental has been presented as £29 plus VAT. That is £34.80 cash per month including VAT. Confirm the current offer, minimum term and what is included.

Will funds arrive the next day?

Eligible transactions may settle next day, subject to cut-offs and product terms. Ask for examples covering evenings, weekends and bank holidays, and test settlement before closing an old account.

Can Barclaycard handle online payments too?

Barclaycard offers online payment services, but online pricing and fraud risk differ from terminal payments. Compare them as a separate channel rather than assuming the shop rate carries across.

What is the biggest risk in a Barclaycard quote?

Focusing on the familiar brand or headline rate while overlooking fixed charges, card categories and exit terms. A written 12-month cost exposes that risk.

Bottom line

Barclaycard can be a sound, scalable option, but its range makes a precise comparison essential. Smartpay Anywhere, Smartpay Touch and a traditional terminal contract solve different problems. Use your own statements, include VAT in cash-flow planning, verify settlement and support, and sign only when the complete written offer beats the alternatives that matter to your business.
